MY REVIEW
As I said during my "Pepper" review this album is tied with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" as my favorite album of all time. This is more like four separate bands playing, John and his band, Paul and his band, George and his band, and Ring and his band. You can tell by listening to this record that The Beatles are near the end of their career.
The album starts off with a good Paul McCartney tune "Back In the USSR", and just gets better from there on. This tune is unique in that Paul plays lead guitar, piano, and drums; John and George play bass, and Ringo sits out.
Most of this album was written during their stay in India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He gets slammed hard by John Lennon in the songs "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey" and "Sexy Sadie". Lennon's guitar on "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey" is brutal to show his attack on the guru. John Lennon's tune "Dear Prudence" is about Mia Farrow's sister who was in India with them. John said that she was such a prude.
"Yer Blues" is a sad song that John wrote about all the suffering he felt during his life. He pours out his bitterness and frustration here.
The songs that George Harrison contributes are "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" featuring Eric Clapton on lead guitar, "Piggies", "Long, Long, Long" and "Savoy Truffle". "Savoy Truffle" is a happy sounding tune, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" shows the sorrows that George is feeling during this part of his career.
John contributes a sad song about his mom "Julia" which is a very good tune.
"Why Don't We Do It In the Road" is a unique McCartney tune. It features only Paul playing all the instruments.
The albums ends with Ringo singing a Lennon tune "Good Night" with a 30 piece orchestra.
