MY REVIEW
This album is half a soundtrack (side 1) and a compilation of singles (side 2). Paul McCartney dominates the song writing for the soundtrack doing the chores on all but two song, "Blue Jay Way" which is a George Harrison song, and "I am the Walrus" which, as you can tell by the lyrics, was written by John Lennon.
"I am the Walrus" is my favorite tune on side one followed by "Blue Jay Way".
This record also features "Flying" written by all four of the lads from Liverpool, a first for them. It has a drug related music theme and there is no vocals just chanting by The Beatles. A good tune.
Side 2 which is a selection of singles has some high points, the John Lennon tunes "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Baby You're a Rich Man", and "All You Need Is Love", and the Paul McCartney songs "Hello Goodbye" and "Penny Lane". Well I guess that is all the songs on side two so the high point is side 2. "Penny Lane" is a joyful tune telling us about Penny Lane in London. It is one of the best Paul McCartney tunes performed by The Beatles.
"Strawberry Fields Forever" was released from two separate recordings that they did. John Lennon licked the first half of one and the second half of the other. The problem was that both halves were done at different speeds and different keys. George Martin slowed down one track slightly and sped the other track up. The results, "Strawberry Fields Forever" in the same key. That is a remarkable feat for a producer and it was all luck.
The final song on the album is the great "All You Need Is Love" which is telling the world that nothing really matters as long as there is love. A great peace with good music.
